Claims Specialist (Recent Graduate), GS-105-5/7

The majority of positions at the Social Security Administration (SSA) involve working directly with the public, and positions are located throughout the country. Our Public Contact Representatives receive extensive training and mentoring in Social Security programs and state laws.

Public Contact Representatives speak with beneficiaries about their rights under Social Security laws; gather facts and evidence to establish eligibility for benefits; make critical decisions to determine benefit amounts to individuals; and use state-of-the-art technology to access and update claims information.

SSA is seeking job applicants with exceptional customer service skills for a Claims Specialist (CS) position in the Glendale, AZ. The CS position is an entry level position for SSA’s field offices. Incumbents are responsible for providing direct service to the public. They conduct interviews and adjudicate customer’s claims for retirement, survivors and disability benefits. Claims Representatives work with beneficiaries to establish continuing eligibility for payment, provide assistance with administrative appeals, authorize payment, offer referral services, and identify and investigate potential program abuse. This is a career ladder position with promotion potential to the GS-11 level. Initial selections are normally made at the GS-5 or GS-7 level.
