2019 Lead Teaching Fellowship

DESCRIPTION

Next Generation Scholars is looking for teachers who can push the envelope to join our 5-week Summer Academy. NGS believes equal access to higher education is the key to making positive change within our community. For our 2019 Summer Academy, we are looking for teachers who can develop and teach innovative, engaging 5-week classes to students in grades 6th through 11th. We believe that students are able to engage with the most challenging social justice issues of today if provided the proper framework. Lead Teachers teach core academic classes, lead selected Friday workshops and write student evaluations at the end of the Summer. Teachers are supported in designing their own curriculum through our 2-week Teacher Training Program. Teachers are challenged to create and deliver curriculum that is hands-on, relevant and engaging. In past years, social studies/humanities teachers have taught courses ranging from “Xicanx History” to 'Literature of the Other' to 'Gender Justice.' Science teachers have taught courses such as “Lego Robotics”, “Code Your Game With Scratch”, and “Neuroscience.” We want teachers who can break these complex issues down in a way that is both developmentally appropriate and challenging and help our students learn to navigate the world we all share.

POSITION SUMMARY

2 weeks of teacher training, curriculum building, and lesson planning spanning June 10th,- June 21st Monday/Wednesday/Friday (training period negotiable depending on prior teaching experience). Training days run from 10am-2pm.
5 weeks of teaching, spanning June 24th - July 26th, Monday - Friday. Class days run from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Teachers are also expected to attend weekly faculty meetings and to schedule one weekly 'office hour' for student meetings.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Teachers lead 2 core academic classes of 12-15 students.
Teachers are responsible for lesson planning and implementation, classroom management and metrics.
Teachers lead advising groups that are overseen by program supervisors and social services.
Teachers create, lead, and assist Friday activities and trips.
Teachers are required to attend faculty training, and weekly after school faculty meetings, and at least weekly office hours for student meetings.
Teachers work with the social services department to support the non-academic needs of their students.

QUALIFICATIONS

BA/BS from a 4-year college or university (Students in their third year of college are invited to apply with demonstrated interest in education and social justice)
Ability to work effectively and constructively in groups.
Strong leadership and communication skills.
Experience as a classroom teacher.
Experience working with students from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

COMPENSATION

This is a paid position with a stipend upon completion of the entire teaching period and satisfactory completion of all course metrics. Stipends are commensurate with experience, and range from $2000 to $3000.
